Vito Technology Upgrades The Star Walk Star Database, Enhances Graphics, And More
March 23, 2012
Tons of apps have already been updated for the iPad's Retina display. It's obvious that a graphically focused app like Star Walk would most certainly be updated to take advantage of that improved visual experience, which it has. However, the iPhone and iPod touch version isn't being ignored and was recently updated with the non-Retina display features, such as an upgraded star database.
March 15 is when Vito Technology released the third generation iPad-optimized version of their stargazing app. Star Walk v5.7 included high resolution user interface elements, high resolution Picture of the Day photos, and high resolution textures for planets, constellations and satellites, plus now allows up to 200,000 objects to be displayed on screen simultaneously, compared to the limit of 10,000 for older iDevices.
In addition to the iPad Retina display support, Star Walk for iPad v5.7 also mentions "New SkyLive with animation" and "New HIP Catalog with more than 170k stars." Those two enhancements make up the changes in today's release of Star Walk for iPhone and iPod touch v5.7. Not quite as exciting as the Retina news, but it's certainly worth noting.
Beyond the app update news, I have one more item to share. Similar to the Star Walk Month of Astronomy contest last year, the Star Walk Stunning Stargazing on the new iPad Giveaway (Official Rules) takes place on Twitter and offers the chance for fans to win iTunes gift cards and more.
