AppAdvice Game Of The Week For April 26, 2012

April 26, 2012

Every week, our staff will handpick a game from the past seven days that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These games will always be from a wide variety of genres, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and can’t quite put it down. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy, and happy gaming!

Spellsword

This week’s pick will be an extremely hard one to put down. Spellsword is like Super Crate Box on steroids!

You will play the role of the hero with the spellsword, which is so powerful that it can destroy hordes of enemies in a single blow. There are various cards that you collect to launch special attacks or gain abilities to help you in battle, and the sword gets a nice element for your regular attacks, too.

The game features Missions and Endless mode in three arenas. Thanks to the Missions campaign, there’s a lot more to this game than there is in SCB. You will get even more spellcards as rewards, as well as equipable items and currency. Your cards can be upgraded too, so you will become even more powerful as you play.

Game Center is supported, so you can fight your way to the top of the leaderboards and try to get all 33 achievements.

Spellsword has been highly anticipated and it does not disappoint. It’s also insanely addictive once you get started — our staff members haven’t been able to put it down! If you have to get any game this week, make sure to download Spellsword. It’s a universal game for your iPhone and iPad for only $0.99.

Honorable Mentions Marvel vs. Capcom 2

It’s finally here. One of the most popular fighting games of all time, now on your iOS device.

MvC2 features some pretty good touch screen controls that make it easy to activate special attacks and calling out your team members for assistance in battle. The graphics stay true to the original, so any fans of the game will be hit with a sense of nostalgia.

The game also features one of the biggest fighting rosters available, with 24 characters available from the start, and 32 more can be unlocked. That’s right — there will be 56 total characters to choose from! No matter which side you pick, your favorites will be here.

MvC2 also features Versus Mode from the start, so you can battle with your friends through Bluetooth. Hopefully an online mode can be added in the future.

If you’re a fan of fighting games or Marvel vs. Capcom, then definitely be sure to check it out. In celebration of The Avengers coming to theaters on May 4, MvC2 is only $2.99 in the App Store and is a universal app for your iPhone and iPad. After May 6, the price of the game will go up to $4.99, so get it while it’s cheap!

Cargo-Bot

The final game we have for you today is a free download in the App Store and is pretty unique. How? It’s an iPad game made on an iPad.

The game will have you teaching a robot how to move crates. Sounds pretty simple, right? Of course, like any game, it gets tougher as you progress.

Cargo-Bot features beautiful Retina display graphics and is a joy to play. It also teaches you about programming, since it was made with an iPad using Codea. A fun game with some educational background? What more could you want?

The puzzles can be tricky, but you can record your solutions and upload them to YouTube to share — pretty nifty.

This is certainly a special game, and should be downloaded by anyone with an iPad. Codea is a $9.99 app in the App Store (who knows, you could create the next hit to be featured on Apple blogs everywhere!), but Cargo-Bot is free.

Give it a spin and see what is possible with an iPad.
