Does Super Catrio Hold The Key To 8-Bit Superiority?

April 4, 2012
What do you get when you cross Super Mario with Nyan Cat? No, not a disturbing case of 8-bit bestiality. What you get is Super Catrio. I'm telling you: the obsession for retro games that seems to have struck many iOS game developers is not going away anytime soon. Proof of that are the practically simultaneous releases of 8bit Ninja, Gun Runner, and the newest chip off the old block, Super Catrio I. Super Catrio I, as its name proudly proclaims, borrows a great deal of gameplay elements from the iconic Super Mario. In Super Catrio I, there are also bricks to destroy, power-ups to uncover, and stars to collect. Unlike Super Mario, though, Super Catrio I is not a full-fledged side-scrolling platformer. Rather, Super Catrio I is more of a multi-leveled puzzle game. Your objective in each level of Super Catrio I is to retrieve the key hidden somewhere within the confines of the level. This key will then open the door leading to the next level. To help you get the key, as well as to collect the star in each level, a number of power-ups, including one that turns you into an indestructible ball, another that gives you the ability to climb walls, and yet another that makes you fly, are made available. Super Catrio I looks like a game that would appeal more to kids than to adults, given its winsome main character, brightly colored graphics, catchy soundtrack, and uncomplicated gameplay. Also, it appears to have been made by a native of China, so expect some poorly translated English instructions to get shown as you play. Designed for the iPhone, Super Catrio I is available now in the App Store for $0.99.
