Hacker News Client News:yc Earns Up-Votes For Its Brand New iPad Version

April 5, 2012
If you consider yourself an avid watcher of hacking and startup news, then you must be spending an inordinate amount of time browsing the pages of Y Combinator's Hacker News website. Hacker News is a social news website with a no-frills design: just a clean list of relevant topics, which you can up-vote and add your two cents to. To be sure, the desktop site is more than adequate in delivering what it's supposed to deliver, but in this post-PC day and age, oftentimes having it delivered on your iOS device is the way to go. And one of the better iOS apps on which to consume Hacker News is news:yc by Grant Paul of Xuzz Productions. Grant, better known as Chpwn, is famous in iOS jailbreaking circles as the creator of a large body of impressive jailbreak tweaks, but he has decided to take the legit route this time in developing news:yc for the App Store. And with a brand new, major update, news:yc has just gotten better. The update brings a number of excellent changes, but none is definitely more significant than the introduction of the app's iPad version. Since its launch a year ago, news:yc has been an app compatible only with iPhone. That is, until now. The app is now universal, so a full iPad version is already at your disposal. The good thing about the app's being universal rather than having a separate iPad version is that you need not make an additional purchase to get the iPad version. Of course, it would be very remiss of Grant not to include support for the new iPad's Retina display in the iPad version of news:yc. The iPad app features high-resolution text and assets laid out nicely on a standard two-pane UI. The update also adds bug fixes and performance improvements to the app, naturally, but a few more noteworthy changes are included. For one, browsing comments is now significantly better, with the default implementation of hierarchical comments as well as the ability to tap on a comment and drop down a Tweetbot-like action panel. Also, you can now save comment threads to Instapaper. Sporting Hacker News' signature orange hue by default, news:yc is available in the App Store for $2.99.
