Combat Mission : Touch ($4.99) by Battlefront.com, Inc. is a real-time strategy game where soldiers fight to claim and hold land. Play as Americans or Germans in this historical game of war.

Players choose a scenario that is based on the invasion of Normandy. For example, the Battlegroup Scholze scenario happened July 11, 1944 in Normandy. The game’s battle summary tells the story of what took place. There are seven different battles to play out.

Once a war scenario is chosen, players command sets of troops to walk, run, hunt or target. Once all troops and vehicles have been assigned, hit the “play” button and the action will play out. This takes about 30 seconds, but players can either fast forward or rewind to watch everything from various angles.

Once the action has finished, players can reevaluate their strategy based on what took place. There are about 20 – 25 turns per battle. Not only must players hold or overtake the victory location, but they must avoid as many casualties as possible while taking down enemies.

The game is strategy-heavy. It was actually too rich for my blood and I love real-time strategy games. The tutorial is terrible. It is a 14-minute video that doesn’t really explain much. This might be why I found the game to be lacking. I was never sure I was selecting the right action. The developers should have a hands-on tutorial where players can learn, step-by-step how to play the game.

I can see how this game would be very exciting to WWII fans, and history fans in general. There are a lot of interesting facts and historical recreations. The game’s creator, Battlefront.com, offers a variety of PC games that are very popular. However, while this game is rich in authenticity, it lacks proper training for those who have never played before. The $4.99 price tag is particularly steep for this game, but I have a feeling that Battlefront.com fans will not be complaining. If you are looking for a complex strategy game, this might be the battle you are looking for. Please note that this game is only available for the iPad 2 and the new iPad.
