Speed And His Trusty Mach 5 Dashing To The App Store Through Speed Racer: The Beginning

April 2, 2012
The App Store is chockablock with racing games, but apparently none of them features arguably the most famous racer in pop culture, Speed Racer. Fortunately, that's about to change with the upcoming release of Speed Racer: The Beginning for iOS. Speed Racer: The Beginning is a result of a partnership between Speed Racer Enterprises and mobile game publisher Social Games International. "We’re really excited to give fans of Speed, Trixie, Racer X, and the rest of the crew another way to experience Speed Racer," said Michael Cisneros, Vice President of Licensing of Speed Racer Enterprises. "SGI’s fondness for the franchise really shows as they’ve kept the authentic look and feel of 'Speed Racer' while making the game fun and exciting for the gamer on the go." Indeed, Speed Racer: The Bad Beginning reflects the classic style of the "Speed Racer" anime, which gained popularity upon its release in the U.S. a decade after its debut in its native Japan in 1958. And, naturally, the game is also pivoted on high-speed automobile racing. In the game, you will play as Speed himself as he drives the Mach 5 in his attempt to be the greatest car racer of all time. You will inhabit a side-scrolling world of race tracks strewn with numerous obstacles and enemy racers. And just like in the animated series, you will be aided by your team, most notable of which is the helicopter-riding Trixie. You will be able to customize the Mach 5 as well as your team with a variety of power-ups in order to boost your chances of winning. Speed Racer: The Beginning will be released this month and will be available for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. I grew up watching the series and even liked to some extent the critically panned 2008 film adaptation, so I'll make sure to take this game for a test drive as soon as it's out.
