The Hero Academy Has A New Team, New Playfield, And Is Updated With iPad Support

April 6, 2012
Announced a week ago, Robot Entertainment's big Hero Academy update is now available for download. The highlights of v1.2 include iPad support, a new team, a new playfield, and tweaks to improve current features. While nearly every portion of this update should be of notable interest to fans, for me, iPad-optimization is a huge plus. Sure, the actions don't require a ton of precision, but the bigger buttons and gameplay area make it much simpler to quickly upgrade characters and make moves without performing an undo or getting upset after eagerly submitting your turn. Speaking of undos, Robot Entertainment has added the option to perform single action retractions instead of erasing every move made during the current turn. Toggled in settings, the gear icon near the top-left, the Partial Undo can be set on or off and changed within seconds, if you change your mind. As the fourth heroic team choice, The Tribe are an aggressive and brutal group, capable of easily finishing off weak opponents and crystals in a single move. Here is a list of The Tribe's specific characters:
  • Warrior – Can instantly knock out any enemy until below 50 percent health (and crystals at 25 percent health).
  • Axe Thrower – Can deal 100 extra damage to enemies over 50 percent health.
  • Witch – Can explode fallen enemies at range to damage nearby forces.
  • Shaman – Can chain heals through multiple allies.
  • Chieftan – The Tribe Super Unit is an AOE fighter who can pull enemies in closer or charge to attack distant foes.
Complimenting the new team, players can earn Tribe specific achievements and play on the Tribe-themed playfield. Featuring barbed crystals and special squares that make characters resistant to magic, this new field can be one harsh battleground. Further improvements made by Hero Academy v1.2 include:
  • Gameplay balance adjustments to Council, Dwarves, and the single-crystal map.
  • Added Korean, French, and Spanish language support.
  • Various stability and functionality fixes.
For my final note, I'd like to pass along that Robot Entertainment has made a temporary price reduction on the in-app purchase to unlock the Dwarves heroic team. So, if you're looking for a new way to defeat your friends, now could be the time to expand your arsenal. Hero Academy is a universal app compatible with iPad, second generation iPad, third generation iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, 32GB and 64GB third generation iPod touch, fourth generation iPod touch and newer running iOS 4.1 or later, and available in the App Store as a free download.
