New Comic Reader For iPad Emanata Seeks To Emanate Independent Artistry
June 8, 2012
The entirety of the App Store description page of the just released app Emanata simply reads, "A comic and visual story reader for the iPad that lets emerging visual storytellers show their work and interact with readers." Similarly, the entirety of its official Web site contains just the following:
e·ma·na·ta [noun] Lines drawn around an object to indicate shock or surprise in comic books or visual arts.Clearly, the publisher of Emanata is a company of few words. And come to think of it, this is only fitting in light of the mostly visual nature of Emanata. Churn Labs, which publishes Emanata, describes the iPad app as a "Flipboard crossed with Adult Swim-like content." The company maintains that, while there has long been a thriving ecosystem for mainstream comics on the iPad thanks to such publishers as Comixology, there has never been one especially created for indie artists. And this is where Emanata enters the picture. Emanata is a new iPad platform on which up and coming artists can showcase their comic artwork. They're free to populate the app with their original content, knowing full well that they nonetheless get to keep the rights to their work. The app appears to have been based from an earlier Churn Labs product called JLMeyer, which highlights the drawings of renowned illustrator Jennifer L. Meyer. Just like JLMeyer, Emanata supports a number of options for sharing featured works and it also links to the artists' sites. Emanata is available now in the App Store for free. Download the app and find out if what you see inside is amazing enough to make you develop your own emanata around your head.
