Popular Handwriting App Notability Is All Boxed Up

June 14, 2012
For as long as I can remember, Notability has been on sale at 80 percent off. Also for as long as I can remember, Notability has been one of the top paid iPad productivity apps. To be sure, its affordability keeps this hugely popular handwriting app in place in the App Store's top charts. But its excellence is also a big factor. Notability really is a low-cost yet high-quality app, and it's become even more excellent following its recent update. The latest version of Notability introduces a new addition to its supported storage and syncing services. Sadly, it's neither Evernote nor Google Docs. Instead, adding to Notability's existing Dropbox and WebDAV connectivity is Box. From now on, you can save your notes as PDF, RTF, or Note to your Box account. Consequently, you can autosync your files between Box and Notability. In addition, the update apparently enables Box OneCloud support. But when I checked the recently installed Box app on my iPad, Notability was not in the list of partner apps that support OneCloud's "round-trip" file editing and syncing feature. The Box app does have an "Open in Notability" option, though. Beyond its Box integration, Notability now also supports special characters in RTF notes. Moreover, the app's spellcheck dictionary can now be manually augmented. Simply select a supposedly misspelled word to bring up the context menu and tap "Learn." Finally, the update also includes various performance enhancements. These include improved recording stability, increased sync reliability, smoother zoom view, and, of course, some bug fixes. Notability for iPad is available in the App Store for only $0.99. Aside from being a handwriting app, Notability is also a typing, recording, and PDF annotation app. That's a lot of bang for the buck, if you ask me.
