Apple Could Announce Record iPad Sales, With iPhone Sales Less Certain
July 23, 2012
Apple will announce their third quarter financial results beginning at 5 p.m. EDT tomorrow, July 24. Investors and consumers alike will be most interested in seeing how many iPhone and iPad units were sold during the previous quarter.
The earnings report, which covers the period of April through June, will include a first look at just how popular the new iPad has become. The third-generation tablet arrived on March 14. On March 19, Apple announced that 3 million iPads were sold during its first weekend.
In the previous quarter, Apple sold 11.8 million tablets, or a 7 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold a record 15.43-million iPad units during the 2011 holiday season. This record could be broken, as investors seem to agree that 18.75 million iPads units were sold during the previous quarter.
Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone sales numbers will also prove important. Since October, Cupertino has sold the iPhone 4S, along with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.
Last quarter, the company reported iPhone sales of 35.1 million, which represented an 88 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. In the holiday quarter of 2011, Apple sold a record 37.04 million iPhones.
Investors think Apple will sell around 29 million iPhones during the quarter.
Apple’s numbers will be announced just hours after AT&T releases their own financials. Last week, Verizon announced iPhone sales of 2.7 million units, which was down 16 percent from the quarter before.
