AppAdvice Game Of The Week For August 17, 2012
Every week, our staff will handpick a game from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These games will always be from a wide variety of genres, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and can’t quite put it down. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy, and happy gaming!
Kung Pow GrannyRemember that fun little game called Tilt to Live? Now think if it had more firepower. Well, you no longer need to think about it because it exists in a new game called Kung Pow Granny.
This game features Grandmaster Granny, who can probably kick more butt than you can. She’s in a battle with reapers, ghosts, and rock monsters, and the only person that can help her with that is you.
The game features smooth tilt controls with three options: Regular, Top-Down, and Sleepy. All you have to do is tilt your iPhone or iPad to move Granny around. If tilt controls aren’t your thing, then you can opt for the directional pad control too.
The game will have you moving around various arenas to avoid the enemies. Various power-ups will appear, and you’ll have to grab them in order to unleash some wrath on your enemies. Defeated enemies will drop coins that you can use in the Stash to get new power-ups and even upgrade them for more fury.
The game has two difficulty levels: Novice and Master. If you like to start out slow, then the Novice will suit you. If you like fast paced action and frenzy, then go for Master — it’s more fun.
The game ends when Granny runs into an enemy, so watch out!
Kung Pow Granny has quickly become one of my favorite new games lately, and it’s quite addictive. You will keep playing to try and beat your previous high score. It’s just one of those games that has kept us busy during some downtime, so make sure to give it a whirl!

Honorable Mention PITFALL!PITFALL! is the revival of the original classic video game on the Atari 2600. But this isn’t what you would have expected for an iOS port.
Rather than just enhancing the graphics for iOS, Activision has turned Pitfall into a variation of the good old Temple Run. Who knew that a game that created a genre on iOS would have influenced a game from 30 years ago?
However, Pitfall! isn’t just another clone of Temple Run. It has an interesting shifting perspective as you play, and has various vehicles to help you out, as well as having you swing over pits with a conveniently placed rope.
Pitfall will feature “retro” HD graphics, which may sound confusing, but it makes sense if you think about it. The game uses low-poly graphics, which is basically a tribute to the pixelated origins of the original.
If you love endless runner games or miss playing Pitfall, then give this game a chance.
