Google Acquires Snapseed Developer In Bid To Take On Facebook's Instagram

Google has agreed to acquire Nik Software, maker of the popular Snapseed photo-editing app for the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad. This news comes just months after Facebook acquired Instagram, according to news first published by The Verge. First launched for iOS in June 2011, Snapseed ($4.99) won Apple’s iPad App of the Year award for the year. Soon after, Nik Software launched Snapseed for Mac OS X and Windows. In addition to Snapseed, Nik Software offers Color Efex Pro and Dfine for Mac and Windows customers. Although Snapseed’s popularity has never reached Instagram heights, it does have over 9 million users. With Google’s acquisition, those numbers will almost certainly increase. As part of the deal, a portion of Nik Software employees will relocate from San Diego to Google’s Mountain View, Calif. campus. They will primarily work to bring Snapseed intergration to Google+. Financial details regarding Google’s purchase of Nik Software were not announced.
