Can You Help Retrobot Save The World?
Retrobot ($0.99) by Endeavor Bros Interactive Software and Monkube is a shoot 'em up comic style adventure game that comes equipped with addictive tank shooter gameplay and challenging boss battles.
Most shooters don't have much in the way of plot, but Retrobot has a comedic storyline that incorporates plenty of jokes that will appeal to serious game players. So what's the game all about?
The year is 2025, and menial tasks are now completed by a network of automated robots. Retrobot was built to work, but he was also specially programmed to play video games with his creator, making him the perfect hero when a server crash causes an army of automated robots to take control of the world.
It's a fun, engaging storyline that pits players against the robots who are trying to take over the world as Retrobot searches for his lost master, overcoming enemies and other obstacles on his journey.
I've talked about the storyline extensively, but the gameplay is pretty darn good too. You move with a slider on the left side of the screen and shoot with another slider on the right side of the screen. These controls work out surprisingly well - I had no trouble with movement or with aiming.
There are an array of enemy robots to shoot, and many of them will shoot back at you. Gameplay starts off easily enough but quickly escalates, so it will take some skill to progress. Boss battles can be especially challenging, but even when you're dying, this is a fun game.
Enemies will drop extra health and other bonuses like ammo boosts, so you'll want to grab those up, and you'll also want to make sure to avoid projectiles and lasers to stay alive. Your health bar is located at the bottom of the screen, and when it drops into the negative, it's game over.
There are quite a few cutscenes and comic-style interludes between levels, but you can use the fast forward button on the bottom to skip through them if you'd rather focus on the gameplay. You can also turn them off entirely in the options menu. I highly suggest watching the comics though, because they're entertaining.
My only complaint about this game is the size - it takes up almost half a gigabyte of precious storage space, requires a WiFi connection, and takes quite a bit of time to download. If you've got the storage space though, it's great.
With its high quality graphics, its hand drawn comics, and its fun personality, Retrobot is one game that you won't want to miss this week. The game is currently on sale for $0.99, but the price will jump to $2.99 soon, so make sure you grab it on the cheap.
