Facebook Messenger Now Includes Recorded Voice Feature, VoIP

January 3, 2013
Facebook is adding what could become a very popular feature to the company’s Messenger app for the iPhone/iPod touch. A new update brings recorded voice to the free app for the first time, according to The Next Web. Advertised as a way to “send a quick voice message when you have more to say,” the new feature sits alongside the photo and camera buttons within the app. This “record” toggle can be pushed and held to record messages. When you don’t like the message, sliding it to the cancel position deletes it. By contrast, letting it go sends it to the person that you’ve been chatting to. Also launching on Facebook Messenger is a new VoIP service being tested exclusively in Canada. This allows users to establish a peer-to-peer connection and make a call without using minutes. Instead, this feature will go against a user’s data plan. Both new features are part of Facebook Messenger 2.1, now is available in the App Store. See also: Poke!
