Foursquare, the popular location-based social networking app, has just received another update. To be sure, just like the updates recently issued to the app, Foursquare's latest update is but incremental. But altogether, this new update and its similarly incremental predecessors make a huge difference in the app's development. This update is concerned with one thing and one thing only: improving Foursquare's check-in notification settings to help you keep up with the people you care most about. Beginning with the latest version of Foursquare, you can choose for each of your Foursquare friends the circumstances in which you want to be notified, if at all, of their check-ins. Just hit the profile tab in the app, tap My Settings, and select Check-In Notifications. Provided that check-in notifications are already enabled, you can go through the list of your friends and set how you want to be notified when they check in. Below are the three check-in notification settings you can choose for any of your Foursquare friends:
Designed for iPhone and iPod touch but also compatible with iPad, Foursquare is available in the App Store for free. An edition of the app specially designed for business owners is also available for free. Simply called Foursquare for Business, the app was released just last week. [gallery link="file" order="DESC"]
- Choose "ALWAYS" for close friends and family you always want to keep up with. You'll get notifications for all their check-ins, no matter where they are in the world.
- Choose "NEARBY" for friends you'd like to hear about from time to time. We'll only notify you when they're close by.
- Choose "OFF" for those acquaintances you don't really want updates from. And that bike messenger friend who checks in at every spot on his route.
