Is It Just You Or Is Your Website Down? Be The First To Know With Vigil

February 28, 2013
"I've been using it for a few weeks, and the service paid for itself when it pinged me at 1am because DF was down," writes John Gruber of Daring Fireball. He's referring to Vigil, which has just received its first ever update. Released just a month ago, Vigil is an iOS app that lets you monitor or "keep vigil" over websites using an excellent and easy-to-use interface. To add a site to monitor in Vigil, just enter its URL and title and select a sensitivity type for its push notifications. Each of the four sensitivity types (Vigilant, Normal, Relaxed, and Off) has its unique rules of determining when a site is considered down or back up. You can add an unlimited number of sites and sync them across your iDevices. Vigil also supports one-touch ping with latency calculation for all of your added sites. Vigil's main selling point, though, is its remote monitoring feature, which is available through subscription. This feature provides monitoring of your sites from Vigil's own servers and hourly site performance graphing in addition to push notifications. As mentioned, Vigil has just been issued its first update, which includes:
  • More fine-grained information on each monitor result
  • New statistics in the history display
  • Configure how many failures before an alert is sent
  • Warnings when a subscription is about to expire
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes
Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 6.0 or later, Vigil is currently available in the App Store for free. The free download includes one month of push notifications and remote monitoring. A year's worth of remote monitoring may be purchased via a $9.99 in-app subscription, which is 50 percent off this month in celebration of Vigil's launch. [gallery link="file" order="DESC"]
