Amazon's Kindle Phone Could Launch Later This Year
March 27, 2013
Amazon’s push into the smartphone business may be getting closer to reality. Digitimes is reporting that the largest online retailer in the world will unveil a 4.7-inch device during the second quarter of this year.
According to the report, Amazon’s original plan was to release a 4.3-inch device. However, that plan was later scrapped due to shifting demand towards larger size screens.
This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard about an Amazon smartphone. In July, we reported at length on the so-called Kindle phone. At the time, it was suggested that the Seattle, Washington-based company was working with Foxconn to get the product to market. Indeed, the same company that produces Apple’s line of iOS devices.
There is no way to tell whether the Digitimes report is accurate. However, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see Amazon join the smartphone market.
As I suggested last summer, despite an onslaught of Android-based phones and tablets, Amazon has one thing the others guys do not: the largest online marketplace on the planet. As such, they have the resources to bring all the necessary media to their devices on day one. In doing so, they, like Apple, can give customers a complete mobile experience.
As usual, we'll keep you updated.
