Music Streaming Service Rhapsody Releases New And Improved iPhone App
May 24, 2013
Finally, at long last, after much delay, a new iPhone app has been released for the music streaming service Rhapsody.
Better late than never, eh? Even as the more popular likes of Spotify and Rdio have for months been improving their already great iPhone apps.
According to the Rhapsody team, the new Rhapsody app for iPhone is "the Ferrari of iPhone apps," if for no other reason than that "it's fast and beautiful."
The new app eschews the current trend of using a "basement" or hidden sidebar for navigation. Rather, it maintains a bottom tab navigation scheme, albeit presented with a more modern look and feel than the original Rhapsody iPhone app is.
In the Home tab, you can quickly access New Releases, Popular Artists, Featured, and Popular Albums.
The My Music contains your Library (Playlists, Artists, Albums, Stations, Queue, and Listening History) and your Downloads (for offline listening).
The Search, Browse, and Settings tabs are fairly self-explanatory.
The new Rhapsody iPhone app comes as part of a universal update to Rhapsody for iPad, which is now simply called Rhapsody. Compatible with iDevices running iOS 5.1 or later, it's available now in the App Store for free.
The original Rhapsody iPhone app, officially called Rhapsody for iOS 4, is still available in the App Store for free. As its name suggests, it's compatible with iDevices running iOS 4 (iOS 4.3 or later, to be specific).
A month ago, my colleague Bryan posted a roundup of notable music streaming services. In it he concluded that a "smaller number of tracks compared to other services make Rhapsody less than ideal." He also noted that Rhapsody is in need of an official Mac app.
Perhaps, given the arrival of the new Rhapsody iPhone app, Rhapsody is finally coming to the Mac soon.
