Latest Update To Mash-Up Magazine App Spun Spins City News Back Into Focus
July 6, 2013
Spun, the mash-up magazine app that puts a new spin on news delivery, has just received a significant new update.
When Spun was released on iOS in November last year, it was noted for its focus on delivering city news. My colleague Ramy referred to this special focus in his original review of the app, in which he wrote: "The personalized news on Spun isn’t only organized by topic, but by location too. Instead of updating you on world news, it keeps you posted on what’s going on in your city."
But when it was redesigned and updated to version 2.0 a little over a month ago, Spun began offering trending stories from all corners of the Web rather than from specific city corners only.
Well, the latest update to Spun has restored city switching so that you can now read news from any of the app's supported cities by going to "Include City News" in the app's settings.
You can opt to read news about New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago, Portland, Austin, Boston, Seattle, Miami, Philadelphia, or Denver. You can also select the "None" option, which is amusingly accompanied by a picture of a nun, to exclude any city news from your Spun feeds.
If you choose to include city news, you will see local story badges that indicate which stories are specific to your selected city.
The new version of Spun is available now in the App Store for free. The app is optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 6.0 or later.
The latest update to Spun also adds support for tapping the top bar to scroll all the way to the top, fixes issues with link shortening, and includes improvements to cube navigation.
