Tumblr Issues Security Update To Official iOS App, Urges Users To Change Passwords

July 17, 2013
A few hours ago, an update was issued to the official iOS app of the popular Yahoo-owned blogging platform Tumblr. According to its sole release note, the update brought nothing but a mere security fix. It's a minor update, apparently, but an announcement from Tumblr suggests that it's rather important. "We have just released a very important security update for our iPhone and iPad apps addressing an issue that allowed passwords to be compromised in certain circumstances," says Derek Gottfrid, VP of Product at Tumblr. "Please download the update now." As it turns out, some Tumblr passwords may have been "sniffed" in transit on certain versions of the app. In consideration of this lapse in security, Tumblr suggests that you change your password on Tumblr and on other sites where you use the same password. Tumblr also recommends using different passwords across different services with the help of such apps as 1Password and LastPass. The newly updated official iOS app of Tumblr is available now in the App Store for free. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 5.0 or later. The app received its previous update just a week ago. That update delivered a "brand new discovery experience" with the ability to search blogs as well as tags and the highlighting of trending blogs and tags.
