VLC For iOS Updated With Improved Subtitles Support And Other Enhancements

September 7, 2013
VLC for iOS has just received its first major update since its triumphant return to the App Store. The original iOS app of the popular VLC media player was pulled from the App Store in early 2011 on account of a licensing dispute between the lead developers of VLC and the developers of the iOS app itself. But all's well that ends well, since VLC finally made its comeback on iOS last July with a significantly better set of features than ever before. And now, it has been further improved by its first major post-comeback update, which delivers the following new features:
  • Add UPNP discovery and streaming
  • Add FTP server discovery, streaming and downloading
  • Add Bonjour announcements for the WiFi Uploader's website
  • Add playback of audio-only media
  • Add Deinterlace option (off by default)
  • Newly implemented menu and application flow
  • New translations to Bosnian, Catalan, Galician, Greek, Marathi, Portuguese, Slovenian
The update also improves the app's support for accessibility, external screen video output, passcode lock, and subtitles. In particular, the update adds support for subtitles in non-western languages. The new version of VLC for iOS is available now in the App Store for free. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 5.1 or later. [gallery link="file" order="DESC"]
