Square Acquires Photo App Startup Viewfinder To 'Work On Seller Initiatives'
December 4, 2013
Yahoo is not the only high-profile tech company that has recently snagged a photo app startup. As reported by The Next Web, the mobile payments company Square has just acquired the photo organization app Viewfinder.
The acquisition was announced by Square CTO Bob Lee in a new blog post:
We are excited to announce that the Viewfinder team is joining Square. The team is incredibly talented, having built an app that blends beautiful design and highly technical engineering to create personal, human experiences. This too is our mantra at Square, and the Viewfinder team’s expertise in building simple, elegant mobile applications will help us in our mission to make commerce easy for everyone.Released in the App Store a year ago, Viewfinder afforded users an elegant solution to photo organization and sharing. In fact, it was updated just a few hours ago with, alongside additional iOS 7 UI improvements, a search function to make finding photos to share even easier. As it turns out, though, the newly updated version of Viewfinder is short-lived. The app has been removed from the App Store as a result of the acquisition, although the Viewfinder team points out that existing users can continue using the app for the time being sans updates and customer support. As noted by Lee, the Viewfinder team is set to "work on seller initiatives" out of Square's office in New York.
