Cydia Tweak: Bring The Old iOS Dock Back To Your iDevice With ClassicDock

January 20, 2014

It could be you have an old iDevice that's already been updated to iOS 7, or perhaps your new iDevice never got to run an older iteration of Apple's mobile OS. Either way, if you wish it was possible to bring the old 3-D dock to your iOS 7-powered iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you're in luck, because one jailbreak tweak can help.

Called ClassicDock, the package can be downloaded in the Cydia Store free of charge, and as of its most recent release it's optimized for both the iPhone and iPad. Configuring the package is as simple as it gets: just download ClassicDock on your iDevice, and you'll find that after a respring, your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch has the old-style 3-D dock we used to be so familiar with.

The 3-D dock left in iOS 7, constituting one of a large number of changes made to the design of Apple's mobile OS in the software update. In case you've already forgotten what it looked like, we've included a side-by-side comparison showing an iPhone 5s Home screen without ClassicDock installed (on the left), and one with ClassicDock installed (on the right).

As you can see, the older dock is a lot more like the OS X dock that features on Apple's line of Macs.

In terms of compatibility, ClassicDock isn't yet available for the iPhone 4, nor has it gained support for the prerelease betas of iOS 7.1 (not that we'd necessarily expect this, however). Though it's worth noting that the jailbreak tweak's developer added iPad support to ClassicDock quickly; as such, we'd expect support for Apple's older iOS 7-compatible iDevices to follow soon.

If you have an iPhone 4s or higher running iOS 7 and can't stand the 2-D dock, download ClassicDock now. As mentioned, it's available in the Cydia Store free of charge.

For iOS 7 users looking to recapture the feel of Apple's older iOS iterations, we'd also recommend Share Widget for iOS 7, a free jailbreak tweak that can re-add social network widgets to the iOS Notification Center.
