Mobile App Usage Exploded In 2013, Up 115 Percent

January 13, 2014
Mobile app usage increased significantly in the past year, climbing 115 percent. More impressively, every single app category saw growth, according to Flurry Analytics. Year over year, messaging, or communication apps saw the most growth at 203 percent. These included social and photo-sharing apps. This was followed by utilities and productivity apps, which recorded an increase of 149 percent. Gaming, which many feared would reach saturation levels in 2013, posted a 66 percent year over year growth in use. Flurry believes this year will see a “frenzied land grab in the Communication market.” As a result, “2014 will be a crucial year for these applications and will determine whether they will remain independent, but highly frequented applications, or become killer mobile platforms and distribution channels. “ Earlier this month, Apple reported that App Store sales had topped $10 billion in 2013. In December, App Store customers downloaded a record 3 billion apps, with sales during the month topping $1 billion.
