Today's Best Apps: NFL PLAY 60 And Hopeless: The Dark Cave

January 25, 2014
The App Store takes delivery of hundreds of new apps per day. The overwhelming scene makes it possible to easily overlook an exciting game, valuable productivity suite, etc. However, we have a solution. Today’s Best Apps tackles this problem by providing you with a handpicked and tested list of apps that are truly worth your consideration each and everyday. Remember: Even though in-app purchases typically require your iTunes Store password for processing, you can further prevent them and other unauthorized actions by enabling local restrictions using the passcode locked iOS parental controls

Universal:

NFL PLAY 60 by American Heart Association (Free, 134.7 MB): This augmented reality endless runner expands the AHA and NFL sponsored healthy youth promotion program in an innovative way. The Play 60 Challenge motivates middle school aged kids through appropriate endeavors to be active at least 60 minutes per day, and that's indeed what this digital competition does, just a bit differently. Similar to games such as Stampede, formerly Running With Friends, the player strives to move their character the furthest distance by avoiding hazards and grabbing power-ups. However, there's no swipe control here. Instead, your child, or even you, must literally run in place to charge ahead, hop to leap over obstacles, and twist step right or left to maneuver around corners plus tilt to swerve along the path. Basically, all actual physical motion, which can be quite effective, especially if executed for an hour or more. Filling the final spaces of the challenge are mini-goals to further motivate as well as coin collection to unlock characters and so forth. The game features cartoony 3-D graphics, fast-paced techno tunes, mini-objectives and level progression system, positive coach-type assistance, interesting factoids, constructive real world activity recommender, and other resources. NOTE: An arm span or two-sized, non-obstructive physical space and secure iDevice grip is required for safe operation.

Hopeless: The Dark Cave by Upopa (Free, 21.4 MB): Discover your degree of self control as you save the blobs in this quirky, creepy, and challenging survival-type action-arcade game. In the darkness of a cave, surrounded by growls and other scary sounds, sits a lone luminescent creature holding a weapon. Sadly, the being's glow only reaches so far, making most objects unrecognizable. Suddenly, an enormous, red, vicious monster steps out from the shadows and tries to nab the lump-shaped little one but, thankfully, you were able to quickly target the beast by tapping on it quickly with your finger. More will come, although, so shall other blobs. Therefore, you must remain alert, pinpointing only the monsters while allowing the light-emitting beings to huddle and make a valiant stand for survival. Do your best to protect the fear-filled creatures because once they are all snatched away into nothingness, it's all over. The game features cartoony 2.5-D graphics, eerie sound effects, and in-app purchasable power-ups. A leaderboard is said to be "coming soon."
