ReadKit Gains Individual Account Preferences, Custom Keyboard Shortcuts And More

February 15, 2014
ReadKit, the popular read-later and RSS client for Mac, has just received a major update. First and foremost, the latest update to ReadKit adds support for setting individual account preferences, as opposed to global preferences. Now, you can customize the grouping, sorting, syncing, image caching, and dock badge display for each service you're using in ReadKit. (ReadKit supports Instapaper, Pocket, Readability, Pinboard, Delicious, Feedly, Fever, NewsBlur, Feedbin, and Feed Wrangler.) The update also adds support for customizing keyboard shortcuts plus improved keyboard navigation with arrow keys. ReadKit developer Webin explains:
There are several new shortcuts, and you can also navigate with the left, right, up and down arrow keys, so it is worth a little explanation. Left and right arrow keys allow you to jump between the sidebar and the article list, while up and down keys select the previous/next item in the actual list. ⌘+right expands, and ⌘+left collapses the selected folder on the sidebar. There is an option in shortcut preferences called “Right key behavior”. This option controls the behavior of the right arrow key when an article is actually selected.
Note, too, that the default "Mark as read" shortcut has been changed from A to M. The new version of ReadKit also adds syntax highlighting for code blocks, along with the following improvements:
  • Added sharing via Buffer
  • Frequently used sharing services can be added to the toolbar and accessible via the context menu as well
  • Application sidebar has been rewritten from scratch which has greatly improved its performance and hopefully it looks better
  • Font size can be changed for article list in preferences
  • Improved and added new animations
  • Improved application themes and icons
  • Improved handling of favicons from different sources
  • Readability content parser can be used in built-in browser and added "paper" frame for the content
  • Improved the sync speed of Built-in RSS engine
  • Added preference for Fever whether to sync Sparks group or not
  • Improved compatibility with OS X 10.9 Mavericks
Also including a number of fixes, the new version of ReadKit is available now in the Mac App Store as a free update or as a new $6.99 download. The app is compatible with OS X 10.8 or later. Released in January last year, ReadKit was hailed by Apple as one of its Mac App Store Best of 2013.
