AppAdvice App Of The Week For Mar. 17, 2014
Every week, our staff will handpick an app from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-download for your iPhone or iPad. These apps will always be from various categories, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and have been using them daily. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy!
Jot - Refined Text Editor
Are you looking for a more polished writing experience on your iPhone? Then you will enjoy our App of the Week, Jot - Refined Text Editor.
With this slick app, you will get a dark theme for your writing comfort, which can be quite refreshing from the normal, bright white interface that you find with most writing apps. It’s not your typical writing app, as it definitely doesn’t feel cramped or finicky.
All you need with Jot is a Dropbox account for syncing, where your work will end up in a folder in “Apps” called “Jot - Refined Text Editor.” Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to change this root folder, but hopefully that is possible in a future update.
Jot - Refined Text Editor sports a dark interface, so it makes the text and keyboard actually stand out a lot more than normal. For those typos and errors in your writing, don’t worry! Jot has a great autocorrect system, where your original word will show up above the keyboard, making it easy to correct it if the autocorrect is wrong (this happens way too frequently), as all it takes is a tap.
Moving the cursor around is quite an annoying task on iOS, but Jot sports a large, hard-to-miss red circle in the middle of the keyboard to help you accurately move the cursor around. There are even buttons to help you with highlighting, so editing is made easier than ever before thanks to this slick app.
While there is no extension of the keyboard like with other text editors, Jot makes it easy to access your most-used punctuation symbols without needing to tap on Shift (the app uses the standard, dark-themed keyboard that is in iOS 7). All you need to do is tap on the red circle and then swipe your finger over to the character you need. There are even buttons for undo and redo.
We’ve been enjoying Jot - Refined Text Editor for those times when we need to write on our iPhones (though our heavy lifting is done on iPads and Macs), despite the lack of Markdown support. If you’ve been looking for a stylish new text editor for your iPhone, then look no further than Jot - Refined Text Editor. You can get it in the App Store for $3.99.

Honorable Mention
Prism™
For all of our photographer friends out there, our Honorable Mention for the week will add some new depth to your images. Say hello to Prism™.
This unique photo editing app places the focus entirely on colors and the matching filters to go with them. The interface is gorgeous and gets rid of your traditional UI elements to go all out on visuals. Prism™ makes it easy to use your latest image in the Camera Roll, or you can swipe through your recent images or do it faster with the spinning dial. You can even get new captures directly with Prism™ if needed.
Once you have your image, you can tap on the dial to select the color group you want, and then go through the corresponding filters. Prism™ features 14 color groups and a total of 128 professional filters, so there is definitely variety in this app. The only negative is that you aren’t able to adjust the intensity of the filter, so you’re stuck with the default appearance, without any way of making it a bit more subtle. Prism™ allows users to save images directly to the Camera Roll and also share them with the native iOS Share Sheet.
We’ve been loving the sleek design and interface of Prism™, and also enjoy how intuitive it is to use the app. If you’re in the mood for a fantastic app with stunning, emotional filters for your photographs, then make sure to pick up Prism™ for yourself. You can get it in the App Store for your iPhone for $2.99.
