Apple has unveiled "Metal," a new technology capable of bringing true console-quality graphics to its mobile operating system.
The technology brings a tenfold increase in rendering efficiency to A7-powered iOS devices, meaning iPhone 5s, iPad Air, and second-generation iPad mini owners will be able to enjoy outstanding levels of graphics on iOS.
To demonstrate Metal, Epic Games' Tim Sweeney showed off a designed-for-Metal app, Zen Garden, live at WWDC. To say the least, the graphics available in Zen Garden are impressive.
Best of all, the application will launch on the App Store once iOS 8 is available in fall, and it'll be free of charge.
