Update: Facebook Introduces Slingshot, Yet Another Snapchat Competitor

June 9, 2014
Update: The app has been pulled from the App Store. More than likely, it will go live tomorrow. Facebook is once again trying its best to take on Snapchat. As first rumored late last month, the social networking giant has just released Slingshot on the App Store. Users can share both photos and videos. After sharing media, friends will have to “sling” something back before they can see your shot. You can then react to a shot or swipe it away. Once a shot is swiped away, it will no longer be viewable. For a personal touch, you can also add text and draw on images. Facebook was turned down after making a $3 billion offer for Snapchat in late 2013. And this isn’t the first time Facebook has designed an app to compete against Snapchat. Facebook Poke was released in 2012, but pulled from the App Store in May. Slingshot is designed for the iPhone/iPod touch and will be free. It is not yet available in the U.S. App Store, but should be arriving momentarily. Interestingly, the app release date lists tomorrow, Tuesday, June 10. It requires iOS 7 or later.
