Today, The Priceline Group announced that they will be acquiring OpenTable, the popular restaurant reservation service and app, for $2.6 billion. The Priceline Group is the company behind priceline.com, booking.com, kayak.com, rentalcars.com, and agoda.com — the company that aims to find you deals on flights, hotels, and rental cars. And now it appears they want a hand in the restaurant reservation service as well — which really makes sense.
In an email from OpenTable CEO, Matt Roberts:
I want to share that today OpenTable announced that it has entered into an agreement to be acquired by The Priceline Group. OpenTable will continue to operate as an independent brand focused on providing you with great dining experiences. Everything you love about OpenTable will stay the way you like it: free, easy-to-use and constantly improving. You’ll have the same real-time availability at more than 31,000 restaurants worldwide, the same super-convenient mobile apps and the same rewarding points program. We will also continue to rollout our new payment product that lets you easily pay with your OpenTable mobile app without asking for the check. The deal is not yet closed, but is expected to be within the next few months. You can find the OpenTable on the App Store for free. And we’re glad it’s staying that way.
