Sparks Fly: Create Visually Expressive Messages With This New Photo-Sharing App

June 20, 2014
If the recent introduction of new emoji in the Unicode Standard and animated GIF support on Twitter's website and iPhone app are anything to go by, the consensus is that text is often not enough. Consider as well the proliferation of various a-picture-paints-a-thousand-words photo-sharing apps, one of the latest of which is an app called Sparks. Not to be confused with Spark Camera, Sparks is an app that lets you create and share visually expressive messages called "sparks." You start out by finding a photo or GIF from across the Web or using your own. You can then add text right on the image, with the ability to position and resize it by dragging or pinching it. You can also choose from the app's collection of filters, each of which has its own photo effect and typographic style. Once you're done, you can share your spark on Twitter, Facebook, or any of the channels on Spark. With Spark, you can also discover other users' sparks on the Popular feed and the app's channels, including television, sports, celebrity, funny, and more. Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 7.0 or later, Sparks is available now on the App Store for free. Sparks had a soft launch of sorts last April in the form of Sparks Bay Area Sports, which enabled users to discuss their favorite Bay Area sports teams by sharing sparks. [gallery]
