AppAdvice game of the week for July 25, 2014

July 25, 2014

Every week, our staff will handpick a game from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-have download for your iPhone or iPad. These games will always be from a wide variety of genres, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and can’t quite put it down. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy, and happy gaming!

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon

Looking for an action-packed superhero adventure to kickstart your weekend? Then you need to grab our Game of the Week, Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon from Marvel Entertainment.

This action-filled game comes ahead of the worldwide premiere of the much-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which is out next Friday. If you’ve been eager for the Guardians, then this game should help sate your needs, and you can even understand what makes the bond between a raccoon and his tree so special.

GotG:TUW goes with a cartoonish, graphic-novel inspired look and feel, so it’s closer to the original comics than the movie, in terms of appearance. This should appeal to many of the hardcore comics fans out there, and the animations are all incredibly smooth and fluid. The adventurous soundtrack will get you in the mood for saving the world, and the sound effects are fun.

The gameplay is the best part, especially if you’re a fan of the original Battleheart game. You will adventure through 60 levels of real-time, gesture-based combat in the Story Mode. You control a team of up to four heroes, and you can attack the waves of enemies from anywhere on the screen by drawing a line from your team members to their intended targets. Even more heroes and villains can be recruited in the Arena Mode, so there’s a lot to do in GotG:TUW.

We’ve been enjoying questing as our favorite heroes from Guardians of the Galaxy, and if you’re a fan of the comics or looking forward to the movie, then you need to check this game out. Get it on the App Store as a universal download for $4.99.

Honorable Mention Bio Inc

In the mood for a strategy game that has you fighting against the doctors instead of helping them? Then you will love our Honorable Mention: Bio Inc. It’s like a mixture of Surgeon Simulator and Plague Inc., making it the perfect combination.

To get started in this strategy game, you’ll need Bio Points. These can be earned by tapping on viruses and bacteria that pop up in the various body systems of your victim. These are used to upgrade three things: diseases, risk factors, and recovery points. When all three of these are manipulated effectively, you can achieve the point of the game, which is killing the victim. It’s a bit dark and twisted, but it’s all in good fun, providing players with hours of entertainment as well as exercise for the mind.

The game has a wide variety of illnesses, ranging from chronic stress to muscular dystrophy. A disease that is contracted by one system can also affect another, making you plan and strategize how you’re going to take the person down. Risk factors are the aspects of someone’s life that can make them more susceptible to getting sick. The game does include recovery for the victim, but this is what you are fighting against — if recovery reaches 100 percent, then it will counteract all of your efforts in the game and restore their health. This game makes you think outside of the box.

We’ve enjoyed the dark strategy involved with Bio Inc., and if you are looking for a twist to your usual strategy game, then you should pick this one up. You can get Bio Inc in the App Store as a universal download for $1.99.
