Apple faces class action lawsuit over alleged Labor Code violations in California

July 23, 2014
Apple is now facing a class action lawsuit filed by a number of its former employees over alleged violations of the Labor Code in its home state of California. As reported by TechCrunch, the lawsuit affects approximately 20,000 former Apple retail and corporate employees in the state and cites Apple for not granting "timely" meal breaks, rest breaks and final paychecks. The lawsuit was originally filed by Brandon Felczer and several other former Apple employees in 2011. But it was only yesterday that it was elevated to class action status by the California Superior Court. According to Tyler Belong, a lawyer with the firm representing the plaintiffs:
Just yesterday, after years of litigation, against Apple’s opposition, and after voluminous briefing and lengthy oral argument, the California Superior Court granted Plaintiffs’ motion and certified the case as a class action, appointing Plaintiffs and Plaintiffs’ counsel (Hogue & Belong) as the class representatives and class counsel on behalf of approximately 20,000 Apple employees. In other words, as of yesterday’s ruling, Apple now faces claims of meal period, rest period and final pay violations affecting approximately 20,000 current and former Apple employees.
