British Airline Carrier EasyJet Updates iOS App With Support For Apple's iBeacon Tech

July 8, 2014
EasyJet, the largest airline of the U.K., has just updated its official iOS app in line with the soft launch of its integration with Apple's iBeacon technology. As announced by the airline in the release notes of the latest update to its EasyJet Mobile app for iOS, iBeacon is being implemented this summer "at selected airports across the network to enhance the in airport experience." EasyJet Mobile's iBeacon support is likely to provide automatic alerts and display of options upon a user's arrival near or at an airport. These options may include those for the app's key features, such as check-in, mobile boarding passes, booking management, and flight tracking. Check out the video below for an explanation of the app's flight tracking capabilities: If you can't see the video embedded above, please click here. Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 7.0 or later, the new iBeacon-enabled version of EasyJet Mobile is available now on the App Store for free. Introduced by Apple at last year’s WWDC, iBeacon is an indoor positioning system that uses Bluetooth low energy proximity sensing to notify nearby mobile devices with a compatible operating system or app. Before EasyJet, Virgin Atlantic had implemented iBeacons throughout sections of London’s Heathrow airport, thereby notifying present passengers with customized messages, offers, and travel information pushed to their iPhones.
