Shelf Control: Rooster Serves Serialized Sections Of Novels Every Day On iOS Devices
July 7, 2014
For this week's edition of Shelf Control, I've chosen an app that essentially recreates the impression of serialized novels — on account of my currently reading a book that started as one, "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. The app is called Rooster.
Just as a rooster is widely known to crow every day at the break of dawn, Rooster is designed to deliver an installment of a great read every day. Not just every early morning, though, since you can adjust the app's delivery setting to morning, noon, afternoon, evening, or midnight.
For a monthly subscription fee, Rooster delivers short installments that take between 10 and 20 minutes each to read. But together, these installments amount to two book-length works. By encouraging you to read bite-sized blocks of text every day at a time of your convenience, Rooster effectively helps you finish two books in a month.
For each month, the Rooster team selects a work of contemporary fiction from award-winning and bestselling writers and couples it with a classic:
Like your trusted friend who always has the perfect recommendation, we also take the guesswork out of choosing your next read. Each month, we pair our contemporary selection with a classic. Both are great on their own and together they’re even better, like a fine cheese with the perfectly selected wine. The installments are presented in a simple yet elegant reader that makes for distraction-free reading, no matter if you're in bed, in line, or on your commute. This reader allows for a bit of customization, with support for text adjustment, serif or sans serif text, and white, sepia or gray theme. Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 7.0 or later, Rooster is available on the App Store for free. The free download offers a one-month free trial, after which all content will be available via subscription for $4.99 per month. As always, if you have suggestions for Shelf Control, please feel free to email me at aldrin@appadvice.com or simply leave a comment below. [gallery]
