Twitter working on significant enhancements to its direct messaging system

Twitter has just announced a couple of significant improvements to its direct messaging system. First off, the popular social networking company posted a tweet saying that it's rolling out an update over the next few weeks to make deleting direct messages (DMs) "more consistent across web and mobile." In its tweet, Twitter linked to a support webpage on posting or deleting DMs, which includes a notice saying that the company is "restructuring back-end elements" of its direct messaging system. As a result, it says, sending URLs in DMs may not be possible for some users (myself included, as it turns out).

In a second tweet, Twitter announced that it's also working on an update to its apps on iOS and Android to allow users to access their entire DM history on mobile. With this pair of updates to its direct messaging system, Twitter looks set to buff up its service amid the continuing proliferation of dedicated messaging apps. Interestingly, Twitter's official app on iOS most recently received an update several days ago containing "Small changes to UI" and "Small changes to Direct Messages." As for its most recent major update, Twitter for iOS gained support for uploading and viewing animated GIFs last month.
