Apple’s brand new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets don’t feature sapphire-coated displays, but they do include “ion-strengthened” glass screens which should prove ultra-scratch-resistant.
According to Apple’s Phil Schiller, the glass display is indeed ion-strengthened rather than sapphire-coated. Does this mean sapphire isn’t making an appearance on Apple’s new devices? No: instead, we’ll see sapphire coat the Touch ID Home button and camera lenses, though it seems a sapphire display isn’t launching with the new smartphones.
