Pebble smart watch firmware update brings support for iOS 8, emoji and compass

September 19, 2014

Following the official launch of iOS 8, Pebble has just released a firmware update that optimizes its popular smart watch for Apple’s new mobile operating system and enhances it with several new features to boot.

With the just-released version 2.5 of its firmware, Pebble is now fully compatible with iOS 8. In particular, Pebble now offers improved notification management as it also clears alerts from iOS’ Notification Center when they’re dismissed on the watch itself.

In addition, Pebble’s new firmware update sees the long-awaited introduction of support for emoji. “If you’re anything like us, you <3 emojis," the Pebble team notes. “Why waste time typing out how you feel when you can get to the point with a :D ? For those waiting eagerly for emojis on Pebble, we’re ʘ‿ʘ to share Firmware 2.5, delivering all the ლ(╹◡╹ლ) your wrists can handle!”

Furthermore, the update activates the magnetometer of Pebble, thereby enabling the device’s compass and wayfinding apps such as Where To?, which are available on the Pebble app store:

Pebble 2.5 also delivers bug fixes and stability improvements.

To update to the new firmware, just open and connect your Pebble to the Pebble Smartwatch app for iOS, go to the Support section, and select Update Your Pebble in the menu if the update is not automatically initiated.

Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 6.0 or later, the Pebble Smartwatch app is available on the App Store for free.
