It’s likely that the 'iPad Air 2' will sport 2GB of RAM and a more powerful A8X chip

October 13, 2014

The next-generation iPad Air will apparently sport 2GB of RAM, double the amount found in the current-generation tablet and both iPhone 6 models. It should also be packing a more powerful A8X chip.

Both of those new tidbits come from site Apple.club.tw, which recently published an image of an apparent “iPad Air 2” logic board.

While the branding on the A8X processor is very visible, the site was able to decode the information from the RAM chip to determine that it is a 2GB version. If the tablet does indeed offer that amount of RAM, it could support the spilt-screen multitasking mode that has been rumored since May.

The increased memory may also be needed to support a higher-resolution, Retina HD screen, first introduced with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Interestingly, the board also seems to show that Apple will be offering a model of the tablet with a paltry 16GB of storage.

What that could indicate is that Apple will be tweaking its storage tiers to resemble the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. That means that the basic 16GB model will remain at $499. Apple will do away with the 32GB model and offer a 64GB edition starting at $599. A 128GB version will start at $699.

The flagship tablet is also expected to offer support for the Touch ID biometric sensor.

Apple is expected to introduce the “iPad Air 2″ during a special media event this Thursday, Oct. 16. We’ll be covering the event live, so make sure to stick with us to see all of the latest news as it happens.
