Best new games of the week: Squares and Lego Bionicle Mask of Creation
Every week, our staff will handpick a game from the past two weeks that we believe is a must-have download for your iPhone or iPad. These games will always be from a wide variety of genres, but they are chosen because our own staff members love it and can’t quite put it down. So here are this week’s picks! Enjoy, and happy gaming!
Squares – Challenging Puzzle Game
In the mood for a challenging puzzle this weekend? You’re going to want to check out our Game of the Week, Squares by Matthias Hochgatterer.
This puzzle game may have a super minimalistic look and feel to it, but don’t be fooled. It will definitely be one of the more difficult puzzles you can get on your iDevice. Because let’s face it — games aren’t always about how they look, it’s about how they play.
Squares features levels that are split up in various packs of increasing difficulty. The game itself is linear, as players have to go through the levels in order to advance. You start off with the Beginner pack and move your way up, all the way into the Hardcore and beyond.
The objective in each stage is to get the colored blocks to their matching dots. An arrow on the blocks indicates the direction that it will move in when you tap on it, and the blocks can push other blocks if needed, so use that to your advantage. There will also be other gameplay mechanics introduced over time, including arrows that change directions. Observe what everything does and use trial-and-error to find the solution. There is no time limit or number of moves to use — take your time and go at your own pace.
We’re always fans of puzzle games here at AppAdvice, so we’ve been enjoying Squares thoroughly since it was introduced on the App Store. If you’re a puzzle game fan looking for a stimulating title this weekend, make sure to give this one a try. You can find it on the App Store as a universal download for $0.99.

Honorable Mention
Lego Bionicle Mask of Creation
Are you a fan of the Lego Bionicle series of toys? Then you don’t want to miss out on our Honorable Mention this week, which is Lego Bionicle Mask of Creation.
In this beautiful and engrossing title, players can build and battle as any of the chosen elemental protectors that hail from the Okoto island. These include Tahu (Master of Fire), Kopaka (Master of Ice), Onua (Master of Earth), Gali (Master of Water), Pohatu (Master of Stone), and Lewa (Master of Jungle). With so many characters to choose from, everyone can pick and find a favorite element to play with in this game.
But it’s not just about playing around with the various elements. The objective in the game is to find the ancient masks of power, which will unlock the full potential of the heroes, allowing you to defeat the evil forces that are threatening the peaceful and calm island of Okoto. Each hero has their own set of special moves, and the game has a lot of customization with over 100 pieces of gear. Endless levels help you hone your skills, and there is a ton of game time to enjoy.
We’re fans of the Lego games here, so we’ve been getting a kick out of Mask of Creation. If you’re a fan of the Bionicle toys, then this is worth a look. The game can be found on the App Store as a universal download for free, and there are no in-app purchases, ads, or external links to be found.
