Nissan exec welcomes possibility of an Apple Car

Whether you believe that Apple is working on an electric car or not, there is little doubt that the idea has taken hold. Executives from GM and Daimler have spoken out against the idea, and now an executive from Nissan is weighing in.

Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Nissan-Renault, recently told c|net that the idea of Apple building an electric car is welcome news. This might seem against the grain. It turns out that Ghosn is not worried so much about competition as he is welcoming of the raised consumer awareness that an Apple Car could achieve.

“The fact that a company outside of the auto industry wants to do electric cars is refreshing,” Ghosn said. Ghosn’s hope is that allying with Apple, as well as automakers like BMW and Tesla, will help encourage the adoption of electric cars and stimulate innovation to fix issues like battery life, range, charging, and the price of electric vehicles.

Something car-related is definitely going on, as we can see from recent Apple hires. But is it really a car that the maker of all things “i” is developing? Or, are these hires related more towards improving on the CarPlay experience that Apple is already dedicated to?
