What the first apps are telling us about Apple Watch
Last week, developers started updating their iPhone apps to provide support for Apple Watch. This first batch, though small, gives us an early sense of the type of apps developers hope will be popular on the wearable device, which arrives in stores on April 24.
Weather from different perspectivesThanks to the native weather app, forecasts and current conditions can already be arranged on the Apple Watch face to give you a snapshot of your day. This won’t stop third-party developers from adding their own bells and whistles.
Dark Sky is among the first weather apps to offer Apple Watch support. Many more are expected to follow very soon.
Workout appsNo surprise here. Apple Watch is an exercise device, so it makes sense that developers are planning to bring a number of workout apps to the device. These include ones from Nike, Strava, and Runtastic, with many more to follow.
Shop, shop, shopIt makes sense that some of the earliest Apple Watch apps come from retailers, since the device works with Apple Pay. Target’s app has already been updated. In the coming days, apps for Fandango, eBay, and Expedia will also receive Apple Watch updates.
Making travel easierSpeaking of Expedia, travel apps are also going to have a huge presence on Apple Watch.
Thanks to the latest SPG: Starwood Hotels & Resorts app update, for example, guests will be able to check into their hotel rooms with their wearable device. The American Airlines app is also set to arrive on Apple Watch, among others.
No funApps from Wunderlist, Things, and Evernote already support Apple Watch. Other productivity apps are expected to follow including those from Salesforce, 2Do, and OmniFocus.
Information overloadThere are going to be a lot of news and sports apps compatible with Apple Watch. TheScore sports app has already been updated, as has Flipboard. Updates from The New York Times and ESPN are expected soon.
I can’t wait for Apple Watch to arrive. It looks like developers are excited too. For more information on Apple Watch apps, visit our sister site, WatchAware.
