I have to admit, I’m a sucker for productivity and to-do apps. Over the years, I’ve tried them all on my mobile devices; Things, 2Do, Todoist, Todo, OmniFocus, Wunderlist, Remember The Milk, Producteev, Doit.im, Toodledo, TaskPaper, and so many others, that I’ve lost track. Now that the Apple Watch is out in the wild, I have a new platform to try out. Since I was familiar with a lot of these apps, I went searching for what was available on the Apple Watch, and tried to figure out what the best options were at this point in time.
2Do by
Guided Ways Technologies
An award-winning app, 2Do is coming to the Apple Watch sporting many of the same features that are in a lot of the apps on this list. The 2Do app gives you an easy portal into your daily activities, including the ability to look at your daily task list, complete with color coding to help you find the things that need to be done right now. You are able to open up any of the tasks to get a more detailed view, which will allow you to complete the task, reschedule and delete it. You never do that right? There is also an included glance that gives you a quick update on what needs to be done next, how many are overdue, and how many are slated for tomorrow. One interesting thing to note about the glance is while it shows overdue and tomorrow, there is no count for what is left today.
Key Features
- Task completion
- Task details
- Ability to reschedule or delete tasks
- Glance showing you the next thing you need to do
OmniFocus by
The Omni Group
The granddaddy of the Mac/iOS universe, OmniFocus is the power users secret weapon. With a tightly integrated experience that is designed to work in conjunction with the iPhone version, The Omni Group has built a reimagined take that is both familiar yet new. With the ability to add a new task from anywhere using Force Touch, you can easily add things to your inbox on the fly. OmniFocus also includes support for Glances, which shows you the next thing you need to be working on, as well as how many things you have overdue. All of this is in addition to being able to complete tasks and add flags to existing tasks.
One of the most intriguing and useful things that is included in OmniFocus is Continuity. This will allow you to use and browse through the various contexts, projects, and perspectives on your watch, and immediately open up the same view on your iPhone. Conversely, start working on your iPhone, and then continue on your watch, all on-the-fly, with no fiddling. To me, this is one of the more useful implementations, and is something I expect more and more apps to get on board with as we move forward.
Key Features
- Add to Inbox from anywhere
- Complete tasks
- Flag items
- Glance and Notification support
- App Continuity
Clear by
Realmac Software
Clear was a design marvel when it was initially released on the iPhone. With the ability to easily swipe and rearrange, it ushered in a new model for interacting with our to-do lists. While the Apple Watch version does not include the same interface it does a great job of translating it’s simplicity to your wrist. Allowing you to easily switch between your various lists you can quickly complete a single task, or the entire list in one shot. The Glance screen is one of the cleanest and easy to read of all of the apps on this list, with a nice large indicator for when you need to complete the next task on your list. One very cool aspect of the Clear app is that it allows you to use your voice to schedule and reschedule your apps, so no fiddling with digital crowns or tapping like a mad man … just use your voice and schedule away.
Key Features
- Personal Lists
- To-do Lists
- Next Reminder Glance
- Speak to schedule
Todo by
Appigo
Appigo has proven that they know how to listen to customer feedback and give them what they want, and in this case, it is support for the Apple Watch. Allowing you to create and complete tasks, projects and checklists, you can zip through your day with ease. Never forget what you have going on for the day with an easy to use Glance screen that shows you the next three tasks on your radar, as well as your progress for the day. The daily progress meter is one that will prove especially handy, and is something the other apps could learn from as well, as it gives you a better understanding of how your day is looking besides just the next task(s) on your list.
Key Features
- Glance support for next tasks and progress
- Checklists
- Project views
- Voice input for new tasks, projects, and checklists
Things by
Cultured Code
Things is the other heavyweight in the Apple productivity space, and their Apple Watch app will certainly add to their fanbase. With what many consider to be some of the best animations and transitions of all the watch apps released thus far, they are winning praise from all corners. Their decision to focus on a customized Today view that shows you what your day truly looks like may seem like it delivers less features than the other apps on this list, but in reality their execution is spot on. With the goal of task accomplishment being their target, instead of task management, their entire presentation revolves around this concept. The Glance screen takes the progress meter concept one step further by also including a line graph that shows you the previous few days’ accomplishments in terms of completed tasks. This gives you an idea of how productive you are being over time and adds that extra little incentive to get even more knocked off the list.
Key Features
- Customized Today list
- Ability to edit and complete tasks
- Integration with Siri to add new tasks
