Apple's streaming TV service won't arrive until sometime in 2016
Apple has delayed plans for a live streaming TV option until sometime in 2016. That’s according to a new report from Bloomberg.
The company wanted to introduce this year a live TV service delivered via the Internet, but is now aiming for 2016, said people familiar with Apple’s plans. Talks to license programming from TV networks such as those owned by CBS Corp. and 21st Century Fox Inc. are progressing slowly, some of the people said. Apple also doesn’t have the computer network capacity in place to ensure a good viewing experience, said some of the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.
But the report does confirm that Apple will introduce next-generation Apple TV hardware at a special event on September 9. Also expected at the event are new iPhones and iPads.
News of the streaming service surfaced earlier this year. Apple is shooting to offer channels from a number of popular content providers like CBS, Fox, ABC, ESPN, and others. The service is rumored to cost around $40 per month and even include local stations.
I’m not all that surprised that the streaming TV service is delayed until next year. Apple has always seemed to have difficulty finding that perfect formula to solve the TV problem. But hopefully it will be worth the wait.
