Explore an immersive world with Discovery VR for iOS

The folks behind the Discovery Channel are looking to offer fans an even more immersive viewing experience through utilizing Apple’s iOS.

Developer Discovery Communications is doing this through a new app, Discovery VR, which can be downloaded free of charge for the iPhone and iPod touch. In the app, fans of the Discovery Channel can access extra content from some of their favorite shows (like “Gold Rush” and “MythBusters”) and they can gain survival tips for off-the-grid treks.

However, what makes Discovery VR really impressive is the way it delivers its video content. You see, iOS device owners can control the viewing angle in the application’s countless videos through pointing their iPhone’s rear-facing camera in different directions. This creates a more exciting experience for iOS device owners, and the effect works really well in Discovery VR’s various videos (especially the one on sharks!).

Discovery VR can work alongside Google Cardboard, if you happen to have a pair of cardboard VR classes to hand. Though even without Google Cardboard, the effect is still great, so don’t let this put you off.

In the app’s release notes, Discovery Communications explains:

Introducing Discovery VR, a new way to see your world. Discovery has always been about driving curiosity – exploring new places, characters and ideas. Virtual reality allows us a new opportunity to tell these kinds of stories, immersing you in experiences like never before. We’re excited about what this new medium might show us, and will be adding new content regularly.

Best of all, Discovery VR can be downloaded free of charge, and there are no in-app purchases (IAPs) to hinder your enjoyment. The app is also fully optimized for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, too.

You can download Discovery VR free on the App Store now, and as mentioned, it’s optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch.
