Sonos pumps up the volume with a new Play:5 speaker

The original Sonos speaker is getting a huge makeover as the company has just unveiled the new Play:5.

Packed with six drivers, three mid-woofers, and three tweeters, the speaker can easily fill a room with sound. Along with a horizontal orientation as a standalone speaker, you can pair two speakers together in either a vertical or horizontal position for massive stereo sound.

The top of the speaker features touch controls that allows users to play, pause, and change the music track along with adjusting the volume.

The speaker is available in a matte black or matte white finish and will retail for $499. It’s coming sometime later this year.

And even if you’re not looking to purchase a new speaker, Sonos is also brining a nice upgrade to its current line of speakers via its new TruePlay customization feature.

With the companion Sonos Controller iPhone and iPad app, and a special tone emitted by your Sonos speaker, the system analyzes how sound reflects off the walls, furnishings, and other parts of the room. It will then tune the speaker to sound its absolute best.

TruePlay is compatible with the Play:1, Play:3, and the current and new Play:5 speakers. It will arrive sometime this year with an update to the existing iOS app.

Instead of using Bluetooth or Apple AirPlay, Sonos uses Wi-Fi to provide music to the speakers. A number of different streaming music services, like Pandora, Spotify, and others can be used with the Sonos line. Sonos is planning to support Apple Music by the end of 2015.

I’ve been using the Play:1 for more than a year, and couldn’t be more pleased. While it doesn’t pack the punch of the Play:5, it’s a great and inexpensive way to join the Sonos ecosystem. It’s available in black or white and can be purchased now for $199.99.
