Apple set to play Beats Music out on Nov. 30
Beats Music, the music streaming service Apple acquired along with Beats Electronics for $3 billion in May last year, is officially shutting down at the end of the month.
Fade outAccording to a new support document posted on its official website (via MacRumors), Beats Music is going away for good on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015. On that date, all Beats Music subscriptions will be cancelled.
Naturally, Beats Music users are encouraged by the support document to use Apple Music instead:
Make the switchAll the pros that curated music for you are still crafting more amazing experiences. Plus, on Apple Music, you’ll get even better recommendations based on music you already listen to and love, 24/7 global radio with Beats 1, exciting material from your favorite artist, and more.
If you’re a Beats Music user, you can move your account, including your picks and preferences, to Apple Music even before the scheduled shutdown date using the migration assistant in the Beats Music app. For more information, read our related article here or the pertinent Beats Music support document here.
Note, though, that unlike Beats Music, Apple Music does not offer streaming of songs to the Sonos wireless speaker system. But it’s expected to start supporting Sonos before the end of the year.
Beats Music was initially discontinued and closed to new sign-ups concurrent with the official launch of Apple Music last June 30. So its complete termination was far from unexpected.
Of course, Beats Music users are in no way obliged to move to Apple Music. If you don’t mind starting anew and losing your saved playlists, you’re free to sign up with a different music streaming service like Rdio and, my personal favorite, Spotify.
