Apple Pay's China launch sees sign-up hiccups following huge demand
Apple Pay has launched in China. But overwhelming demand for the service is reportedly resulting in sign-up errors, according to a recent report.
The news comes from Caixin (via AppleInsider), which notes that iOS and watchOS device users signing up for Apple Pay in China have been met with a range of error messages: some note that their iPhone is unable to connect to Apple Pay, while others have informed users that the verification for their card wasn’t available. Amid strong interest in China, this has left many users unable to sign-up for and begin using the contactless payment service.
AppleInsider added:
The issues were apparently because of overwhelming demand, as local Apple spokesman Cong Jie told the publication that too many people were trying to sign up at once. The company promised that the issues would be resolved soon.
It’s of course in Apple’s best interests to get the service up and running sooner rather than later, too. Cupertino indeed gets a small percentage of transactions made using Apple Pay, potentially resulting in a huge revenue source for a market as big as China.
So far, Apple Pay is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. In the United States, some 2 million retail locations and around 1,000 banks and financial institutions already accept the payment system. The service will rocket, however, once China is properly on board and these issues have been ironed out.
