iHeartRadio – Music, Radio & Podcasts

The best live radio stations and podcasts from the United States and beyond

iHeartRadio – Music, Radio & Podcasts

Moving Forward

For people who love live radio

Owned by Clear Channel Communications, iHeartRadio features more than 800 live broadcast and digital-only radio stations. While this number may seem small compared to the thousands of stations offered by other apps, the stations offered here are among the country's best and most popular. In addition to its catalog of live radio stations, iHeartRadio also allows the listener to create custom radio stations, based on a song or artist. Aside from audio considerations, the app is also well designed, in that it's organized and easy to navigate. Because of its selection, program quality, and combination of both live and custom radio, iHeartRadio earns an essential spot in this AppList.

Why we love it

The iHeartRadio app is exceptionally well designed, and provides great-sounding audio. You can tune into radio stations from anywhere in the United States, with more than 800 to choose from. Finding the country's best, most popular radio broadcast stations is simple with iHeartRadio.

Pandora Music

A free music and radio app that learns from what you like

Pandora Music

Pandora Radio

For people who don't want to spend a lot on their music

With Pandora, you create your playlist by starting off with an artist or song that you love. Using its proprietary algorithm, the streaming music service then picks additional artists and songs that are similar to what you began with. You can refine the station even further by giving songs thumbs up or thumbs down. The free Pandora account offers a limited number of skips per hour, and is ad-supported. For $36 per year, you can subscribe to Pandora One, which gives you an ad-free experience, more skips, and a desktop app. Pandora One is hardly competitive, in terms of features, with other services, but it's a very inexpensive option for music lovers.

Why we love it

Pandora is a great way to discover new music, since it brings in artists and songs that are similar to your favorites but might be a bit off the beaten path. The ads are short and often tailored to your geographic location, which is a nice touch. The library is quite good for a free option, and the paid Pandora One account allows you to enjoy your music stations on the desktop as well as your iPhone or iPad.

Jango Radio - Streaming Music

All the music, none of the audio ads: that's Jango Radio Mobile

Jango Radio - Streaming Music

Craft your own radio station

For people who love music and hate listening to ads

Fire up Jango Radio Mobile, tell it your favorite artist, and let 'er rip. Or, if you'd rather explore some different tunes, you can do that, too, with a wide variety of premixed stations to choose from. When you've created your own station, familiar thumbs up and thumbs down controls let you customize your playlist even further. Unfortunately, there's no history page, so you can't go back and thumbs down a song (or give it a thumbs up) if you get sidetracked and don't do it while the track is playing. They key differentiator between Jango and Pandora, though, is that the ads within the app are all pop-ups, without any audio interruptions.

Why we love it

Jango has a great selection of music, even if its catalog might not be as vast as Spotify's or Apple Music's. It's totally free, though, and as long as you don't mind viewing the occasional ad when you unlock your phone, there are no commercial interruptions at all. That's right, folks, Jango has managed to do all of their ads visually, without any audio commercials.

NextRadio - Live FM Radio

The app that almost unlocks the FM radio chip in your iPhone

NextRadio - Live FM Radio

A Live Guide to tell you what's playing

The best way to discover independent radio stations

If you don't want to rely on iHeartRadio to bring you local radio stations on your iOS device, then you might find yourself limited. Few apps aggregate all of the other radio stations streaming coverage, but the NextRadio app comes as close to unlocking the FM chip in your iPhone as you'll probably get. With NextRadio, you automatically get quick and easy access to your supported local radio frequencies. You might not find the big-name Clear Channel stations, but you do get the local flavor that's missing from some of those franchised radio networks. Not only that, but a Live Guide feature tells you exactly what's playing on those stations. That way, you don't have to flip through stations to find something you want to listen to. All you have to do is tap, browse, and then choose your favorite. The interface NextRadio uses is a mixture of a slightly opaque text-based outline of genres and boxes for each radio station. When the station provides the information, NextRadio updates those boxes to show what song or show is currently playing. This is a good, quick way to see what's going on even without flipping over to the Live Guide.

Why we love it

When you are nostalgic for home far away, you might want to listen to your favorite local radio stations. NextRadio makes that easy. While it focuses on the radio frequencies closest to you, an excellent search function makes it easy to find other stations. Just type in the frequency, station broadcast letters, city, or station name. You'll get a list of radio stations, and you can choose your favorite. When you hear a song you love, NextRadio makes it easy to buy that tune. Just tap the three dots in the middle of the Now Playing window, and you can like, dislike, or buy the track on iTunes. Apple Music might do a fine job of helping with music discovery, but it misses out on the local flavor of what's hot close to home. With NextRadio, you can listen to your nearest and dearest radio stations and keep up on what's popular at home as well as throughout the nation and world.
