At today’s Google I/O unveiled a number of new features for its popular apps and services.
AI-Powered Search Arriving Soon
Google announced that AI-powered search will soon be available in the Google app on Chrome on the desktop. It will be part of Search Generative Experience in the newly announced Search Labs.
The experience is similar to Microsoft’s Bing with ChatGPT. You can ask a question and see a response with key information on the search page. There will also be web links so you can look deeper at the question.
There will also be suggested steps shown including the ability to ask follow-up questions in a conversational mode.
Context will be carried over from question to question.
You can sign up for Search labs today in the Google app. Access to the SGE experience will arrive in the coming weeks. It will only be in the United States and in English at launch.
Immersive View Coming to Google Maps
Google Maps will soon be making it’s Immersive View even better with Immersive View for routes.
Taking a step beyond Immersive View, you can visualize every segment of the route before you begin. It will work for driving, walking, and cycling.
It uses computer vision and AI to fuse Street View images together. Along with the directions, you can also preview bike lanes, sidewalks, intersections, and parking. A time slider will show air quality info and how the route looks as weather changes during the day.
The feature will also simulate how many cars might be on the road at the selected time so you can get an even better idea of what you’ll experience.
Immersive View for routes will be rolling out in the coming months for Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Paris, Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose, Tokyo, and Venice.
